Defense Department Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Danger with Signal Conversation.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in question contained particulars about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the information circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have risked lives or compromised the mission. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been provided to lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public later this week.
