EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
